Viz MediaFiguratively, of course. VIZ has announced that it won't be releasing all of its newly acquired properties for home-direct consumption. That's right. It's planning to dangle the property teat out in front of the hungry networks and see what happens. What does this mean? In short, it means that shows that have already finished their runs, or large amounts of their runs, will first be dubbed, then be put on American TV, THEN be released on DVD for the same price as all the other DVDs that anime companies put out.

If it sounds like the fans who helped build VIS up are getting the raw deal, that sounds about right to me too. Among the series being offered to networks are The Prince of Tennis, MÄR, Zoids Genesis, and Megaman NT Warrior: Axess. Full press release after the jump.

Editor's Note: Please ignore my obvious bias here. I just think it's bad enough what they do to fans in the US as it is. All we want is our anime fix.

I agree and it's unfortunate for them to seek profits over their fans. But, like every other American company, that always seems to be the case. I can only hope some releases will be still be fast. If not, there's always HK imports (at least for DVDs) ;) ;).

  2. Randall Fitzgerald

Amazon.co.jp ships DVDs out too, so anyone with an R2 player can get freaky with the Japanese goodness.

The saddest part of all of this is that VIZ just made a jump in the market share area over TOKYOPOP. Not sure if that also translates to their video properties, but what can you do?

I feel bad for Prince of Tennis fans, because you can bet that will get picked up for broadcast. And Megaman will probably be on ABC Family (or is it FOX Family? Or whatever it is now.) before summer time. Maybe Zoids Genesis will end up in the same spot as the old Zoids at like 5am in Cartoon Network.

It's just getting depressing. All the more reason to grab fansubs before the shows get licensed.

Also, I'm noticing a demographic trend here… Shay, just out of curiosity… would ANY of these shows interest you in their original form, and if yes, are you a 6-11 year old male?

  3. Shay

Ya, I agree with what you said Randall, definetly.

As for what interests me, I've watched some 'Zatch Bell!' and I liked it enough, and 'Hikaru no Go' is alright because I like the art by Obata. But properties such as 'Vagabond', 'Death Note', 'Tuxedo Gin', and so on are more my thing. But they're not even anime, hehe.

Lastly, I am not 6-11, hahaha, at least I don't think so.

  4. Randall Fitzgerald

See? That's the part the confuses me! The major buyers are people who want the original artistic intent left in the show!

What I see when I look at the places that do this is an intent to recreate another Pokémon or Yugioh fad. Those properties have staying power, but mostly with the 18 to 34 year old males.

Maybe I will see if I can get an interview with someone at VIS to get some questions answered. Or with anyone for that matter. Most of them won't talk to me. Haha. With posts like this it's no wonder.

  5. ikimashou.net - we do otaku » Cartoon Network Brings in the Free Dubbed Anime

[…] That's the long and short of it, but I feel it's necessary to point out that some of those shows — namely MAR, Tennis no Ouji-sama, and Hikaru no Go (oh and basically everything else) — will be airing on this net station, in dubbed only format, at the expense of seeing a retail DVD release, until such a time as Viz feels like it. You may remember that I told you this would happen. Oh well. You can read the full press release after the jump. It's pretty long though. […]
